How to Make and Attach the EASIEST Tassel

Posted in:

Learn how to make a delightful tassel to add charm and interest to your projects

3 Minute Read

Tassels are a splendid way to add interest, texture and fun to your project. They’re an excellent touch to finish off something you’ve crocheted, knitted or sewn.

Tassels are also great for up-cycling home furnishings bought at the thrift store or adding new life to a worn but much-loved garment.

This tassel is perfect for cushions, ponchos, scarves and home furnishings, and take less than 3 minutes to make.

Check out our YouTube channel King Cole Yarns & Patterns for a video tutorial with audio descriptions.

Materials required:

-50g of yarn

-Scissors

-Coaster or credit card

-Large eye needle

Method:

-Cut a 10 inch piece of yarn and double thread it through the corner of your project

-Tie a tight knot and leave this here whilst you create the bulk of your tassel

-Take 50g of yarn and place the end at the bottom of a coaster

-Wrap it around the coaster 30 times

-This will give you a tassel of medium thickness. You can adjust the amount of times you wrap your yarn to less for a thinner tassel, and more for something thicker. Play around with the yarn if necessary.

-Have your last end of yarn finish at the bottom of the coaster

-Cut all of the yarn along the bottom

-Find the centre of this bunch and place it between the yarn tied at the project corner

-Tie a double knot to trap the yarn

-Brush the tassel down

-Cut a 20 inch piece of yarn and use one end to measure the length of the tassel

-Place this length above the tassel

-Create a loop with the longer end and hold it at the top of the tassel where you’re holding below the short end

-Tightly wrap the long end 1cm below the top 5 times

-Make sure the short end of yarn and the loop created stay where they are as you wrap your yarn around

-Place the long end of yarn through the loop created

-Hold the long end and pull on the short end until there’s a tight loop around the tassel

-Thread the short end of yarn through the top of the tassel and down the centre so that it blends in with the direction of the rest of the yarn

-Hold your tassel together and trim all of the uneven ends

Ta dah! There you have created and attached a tassel to your project all in one go!

To complete a cushion, simply repeat this process in all corners or down the sides. For projects without corners, thread your 10 inches of yarn through stitches at the edge of the project, or simply pierce your needle through fabric of creations that aren’t knitted or crocheted.

Take a look at our YouTube video for a more descriptive tutorial to create these easy and simple tassels.

The yarn used for this cushion and tassel is King Cole’s Wildwood Chunky in the shade Stone.
